Treatment

Oncology is the study of the causes, development, characteristics and treatment of tumours, particularly cancers (malignant tumours).

Oncologists specialise in the study and treatment of cancer and it will be your oncologist who is responsible for determining the type of cancer, its location and rate of spread. Your oncologist will also provide you with prescription medication, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and follow up care. Your oncologist if necessary can also make surgical referrals.

The many different types of oncology treatment may be combined in various ways. The treatments you will receive will depend on a wide range of factors, including the type, size and stage of cancer.

When you receive oncology treatment at the ROC, you are likely to meet a range of healthcare professionals including consultant oncologists, resident medical officers, pharmacists, oncology nurses , radiologists, pathology personnel, and palliative medicine consultants.
