Dr James Wylie is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist with a special interest in urology (prostate, bladder and testicular cancer). He has a particular interest in prostate brachytherapy (both ‘seed’ brachytherapy and high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).
Dr Wylie qualified from the University of London in 1990, completed his oncology training at the Christie NHS Trust in 1999 and started his consultant post at Christie during August 1999. Dr Wylie also undertook a 1-year fellowship to Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, Canada in 1998. The prostate brachytherapy service started at Christie in 2000 and to date, over 1000 patients have been treated and an in-house database has recorded excellent outcomes and a quick return to normal activities. The HDR (High Dose Rate) program began in 2008 and ~100 patients have now been treated. The HDR technique involves a single HDR treatment, which is unique in the U.K and maximises patient convenience whilst exploiting the unique sensitivity of prostate cancer to large single doses of radiotherapy.
Dr Wylie also has experience in treating patients with chemotherapy and radiotherapy for both bladder cancer and early stage testicular cancer.
As treatment options for men with advanced prostate cancer are changing quickly, Dr Wylie is able to provide men with access to the latest technology in drug developments and trials.
Dr Wylie’s clinical interests include prostate cancer (all forms of brachytherapy - LDR and HDR), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), arc therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy (new targeted therapies), bladder Cancer (radiotherapy and chemotherapy), early testicular cancer (radiotherapy and chemotherapy).
Dr Wylie is a member of the British Urological Group and the UK and Ireland Prostate Brachytherapy Group.
