Dr Lucas graduated in medicine from the University of Birmingham in 1978, having previously studied Mathematics at Cambridge University.
He undertook postgraduate training and research in Birmingham and Cardiff before being appointed to the post of Consultant Haematologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1989, specializing in leukaemia treatment and bone marrow
transplantation for a range of malignant haematological disorders. He also consults on a wide range of non-malignant haematological disorders
Dr Lucas is a member of the NCRI Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia Working Group, with a particular interest in clinical trials for this type of leukaemia.
