Dr Smith graduated from the University of Oxford in 1996. After graduating he trained in General Medicine at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, and continued his training at the Chelsea and Westminster in London. In 1999, he commenced his training in clinical oncology at The Christie Hospital, where today he is a Consultant in Clinical Oncology. He offers patients both the chemotherapy and radiotherapy that may be required for the treatment of lymphoma and other types of cancer (mostly blood related).
Dr Smith specialises in patients of all ages with the above cancers. His clinical interests include the treatment of lymphoma (both chemotherapy and radiotherapy), adolescent oncology, late effects of treatment and survivorship issues, as well as paediatric radiotherapy. He has experience in the late effects/long term follow up setting and understands the importance of multi-disciplinary care in patients who may develop malignant, cardiac or pulmonary toxicity from their treatment.
Dr Smith’s current research areas include ways of reducing late effects, the importance of patient Information, the psychological effects of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as advances in radiotherapy techniques and modalities.
